To cope with changes in future anticipated use, and still remain in active service, current military vehicle platforms have to undergo a paradigm shift in their capabilities through a series of upgrades to meet future performance targets.
But a complete physical testing programme is expensive and lengthy. So Prodrive was approached to help develop a chassis/suspension system for an 8x8 vehicle by taking a virtual approach to the early stages.
To find realistic solutions, Prodrive also gave consideration to associated issues such as occupant comfort and hardware scalability.
Using Multi-Body-Systems analysis, Prodrive created a virtual proving ground in which we could define and test systems to best meet the required targets. Tyre modelling was integrated into the tests to increase the accuracy of findings.
The programme was completed in just 78 days, and the robustness achieved in the results was enough to justify the allocation of additional funding to progress the concept further toward further physical trials.
